Appreciation - Paul Bonnici

Val Valente writes:

Paul Bonnici departed this world at the age of 87. Coming from a very talented family within the music field, as both his father and brother played the clarinet, he started his studies at a very young age under Mro Gaffarelli and then under Mro Gardenio Botti.

Paul went on to improve his talents when he joined the late Oscar Lucas having his heydays at the Marsa Club and Café Premier. I remember Joe Camilleri (Il-Ginger) and Paul playing together in the same line-up with Oscar, becoming the very best of friends. They kept in touch constantly until his death.

Paul then joined my team at the Villa Rosa until he moved on with my late father's band till his retirement.

His velvet trumpet sound reminds me of the legendary Arturo Sandoval but he was regarded as a perfect replica of his idol Harry James. Paul was very much sought after for his inimitable renderings of Carnevale di Venezia, Trumpet Blues, Oh My Papa and Cherry Pink.

Paul was a true gentleman, very loyal and a hard worker, always giving his utmost. Malta has truly lost one of its greatest musicians of this decade. His demise is a great loss to us all but for sure he has truly earned his musical ID card (Oscar's famous last words) giving him the chance to rejoin both Oscar and my father in the new line-up in Heaven.

On behalf of all members of the National Musicians' Union, I wish to extend my condolences to his wife and all his family.
