As part of its 40th anniversary cultural programme, Din l-Art Helwa launched an exhibition on Malta's fishing heritage at the historic Mamu Tower, the 17th century fortified country home near Marsascala.

The exhibition, which is open throughout this month, is sponsored by APS Bank and includes a vast collection of historic material connected with the traditional fishing industry, old methods and techniques, tools and implements used by Malta's fishermen over the centuries and a large number of photographs of life at sea.

On display are various models of old fishing boats and illustrative panels will allow the visitor an insight into the art of building such traditional sea faring craft.

Among the curiosities is a collection of pots, including the picarel pot, the bogue pot and the octopus pot.

Different types of fish nets are also on display. These include the gill net, the seine net and the dredge net for catching shrimps.

Other implements such as the kannizzati fishing and various long-lines are also exhibited.

The exhibition has been prepared by historian Stanley Farrugia Randon, who has been a council member and volunteer of Din L-Art Helwa for the last 12 years.

Mamu Tower and the exhibition are open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.
