Obituary

CHIRCOP. On June 30, PAWLA, aged 85, passed peacefully away at home, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her great loss her devoted husband Leonard, her children Katie and her husband Vince Saliba, Frans and his wife Jessie, Charlie and his wife Marija, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her brothers and sisters and their spouses, her in-laws, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital today at 3.30 p.m. for St Catherine's parish church, Zurrieq, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 4 p.m., followed by interment at St Leone Cemetery, Zurrieq. No flowers by request but donations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Institute, Zurrieq, will be appreciated. Lord, grant her eternal rest.

Youth Orchestra

The National Orchestra of Malta has called for young talented musicians to join its training programme and subsequently form part of the National Youth Orchestra of Malta for the season 2005/2006.

As part of the training programme, NYOM members will have an opportunity to work closely on a regular basis with members of the National Orchestra of Malta and will also benefit from master classes by professional tutors and conductors.

To be eligible to join the NYOM education programme one must play an orchestral instrument (minimum Grade 6 distinction standard), although one does not need to have taken any exams. Determination, self-discipline and hard working attitudes are of prime importance.

Students who have already played during the previous season of the NYOM are required to reapply.

Short-listed candidates will be required to sit for an audition between July 25 and 28 at the orchestra premises in Valletta.

Audition application forms are to be collected from 88, Old Mint Street, Valletta from Monday to July 15.

Talk on Europe

Jonathan Story will deliver a talk called Europe And Globalisation - Opportunity Or Threat at the Aula Magna, Old University Building in St Paul's Street, Valletta today at 5 p.m.

The meeting is free for members of the European Movement and students. Members of the public will be charged Lm5, which will also give them membership of the movement.

Prof. Story is one of Europe's leading political scientists and is a professor at the European Institute of Business Administration in Fontainebleau, France. He writes frequently in The Wall Street Journal, The Times and Le Monde as well as appearing on CNN and Bloomberg and advising the British Cabinet Office and the Finnish Prime Minister.

His talk will be very topical focusing on how Europe, its institutions and individual nation states should respond to the forces of globalisation.

Cinema Day

Tomorrow is National Cinema Day at the Eden Century Cinemas in St George's Bay and Fgura.

All patrons can enjoy cinemas and IMAX movies for just Lm1.30 from 9 a.m. until late. Eden has 16 screens to choose from in St. Julians alone.

Patrons can also bowl at the Eden SuperBowl for just Lm1.30. Animators and a live band will be there to entertain while gifts are also being given away in great offers at the bar.

Art Auction

St Anne Chapel in Fort St Angelo will host an art auction on July 9. The public will be able to view the items for the sale tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Bidding can be submitted during both events and an online auctioning facility has also been put up at auctions.artissa.com. Tickets for the main event are Lm12 per person, and include a reception, drinks and live entertainment.

Road Closed

Main Street in Mosta will be closed to traffic today from 11 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. Consequently, Eucharist Congress Street will be opened to two-way to vehicular traffic and public transport during this time.
