WasteServ yesterday deplored what it termed the "irresponsible actions by unknown arsonists" who on Sunday set fire to a large quantity of shredded tyres that were to be used as a landfill cover at ta' Zwejra.

The shredded tyres will now have to be substituted with synthetic material at a very high cost, it said. While regretting the inconvenience caused to Maghtab residents and neighbouring localities, WasteServ said it had filed a report about the fire with the police who are investigating the incident.

WasteServ is to step up security measures at Maghtab in order to avoid similar incidents.
