What is the truth with regards to the issue of abortion and the Constitution? The truth is that this proposal has absolutely nothing to do with politics. The truth is that despite this fact, some are all the same tempted to gain a measure of political mileage out of this sincere proposal.

The truth is that this is a supreme act of charity towards the weakest of our kind. The truth is that the vast majority in Malta are in favour of this proposal to further protect our island from the threat of abortion being one day legalised by an inadequate one-seat majority arrangement in Parliament.

The truth is that some are not in favour of this proposal for a number of vague reasons but thus far have been unable to provide any concrete explanation as to why they are against the entrenchment.

The truth is that those who misuse words calling anyone who is pro-life a "fundamentalist" use these labels because they want to detract from the real issue at hand.

They want to convince readers that Gift of Life and anyone who is in favour of this proposal are a bunch of fanatics who are out to condemn the woman who chooses to have an abortion, when all we are categorically saying is no to the shedding of innocent blood of babies by legal abortions in Malta.

The truth is that not everyone can see as far ahead as the majority of the Maltese can on this matter and so they prefer to throw political mud at those who are in favour as they cannot understand what all the urgency is about.

The truth is that a few want abortion to be decriminalised as they are pro-abortion.

The truth is that nobody can offer the Maltese people a guarantee that abortion may not one day be legalised through this simpler one-seat majority arrangement in Parliament and our political leaders know this. The truth is that without the support of two-thirds of MPs, which means the support of the PN and the MLP, the entrenchment will not go through and Malta may lose a one-chance opportunity that may never return.

The truth is that we are half way there and we are all waiting for the MLP to discuss the matter.

The truth is that, for the unborn child, the entrenchment of abortion law into the Constitution is neither a political nor a religious matter; it is a matter of life and death. The responsibility today to protect our future children from the threat of legal abortion is in our hands.

Being against abortion is simply not the same as being pro-life. Not everyone has the right to claim to be pro-life. One can be adamantly against abortion personally but not against others having an abortion through a legalised system in Malta.

This is the technical definition of being pro-choice and is the very opposite of being pro-life. Many have declared that they are not in favour of abortion but are unable to come out and demonstrate in words and indeed even in their actions that they are pro-life. One may be against murder but hold other views about euthanasia; such a person does not fall under our definition of pro-life.

To be pro-life means to be actively in favour of any means to safeguard life, today and in the future. Ours is nothing less than a wholehearted attempt at reaching out to others who live by the truth, to join us in our mission to defend the innocent lives while we still have a majority on the island that is pro-life.

To be anti-abortion is simply not enough and does not guarantee that our children will ever be safe from a future of abortion on demand. The truth is that, in the end, truth always wins.
