The General Workers' Union said yesterday it had suspended planning industrial action following "substantial progress" registered in a conciliation meeting with St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation.

The meeting was called by Frank Pullicino, Director of Industrial Relations.

On Monday the union had ordered the cathedral's wardens out on a lightning strike.

The union is demanding better pay for the part-time wardens.

The GWU said president foundation Mgr Philip Calleja had during the conciliation meeting made fresh proposals for increases for the part-time wardens. He also accepted a union request for a distinction to be made between the salaries of wardens in the museum and the co-cathedral and those assigned as ticket operators.
