Dr Barry J. Green, Scientific Officer, European Commission, Directorate-General for Research, Brussels, will give a talk on Wednesday, July 6 between 10 and 11 a.m. in Room 405 at the Mathematics and Physics Building about Fusion Energy Research in Europe.

Energy sources should be sustainable to maintain our standard of living, safe to protect the population, and have an acceptable impact on the environment. Fusion energy promises to fulfil these requirements and so is a priority thematic area of research in the EURATOM framework programme.

This talk will describe the need for energy, the promise of fusion energy, the European programme for research and development, and the international ITER project in which Europe is playing a leading role. It will also mention the physics issues and technologies involved as well as the knowledge transfer (spin-off) which has resulted from the programme so far.

For further information contact Dr Joseph Sultana at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science on tel. 2340-2461; fax: 2133-3908.
