Angela Galea was the only Maltese athlete in action yesterday at the Mediterranean Games being held in Almeria.
The 21-year-old made her debut in the swimming competitions when taking part in the 100 metres butterfly heats at the Las Almadrabillas Sports Centre.
Swimming in the second heat, Galea could only manage to place eighth after completing the race in 1.05.90, well outside her national record of 1.03.62.
The Maltese swimmer's time was also slower than that recorded in the same event in the Andorra GSSE where she clocked 1.04.86 on her way to winning a bronze medal.
The heat was won by Ambra Migliori of Italy in 1:01.18.
On Friday night, the Maltese athletes and officials took part in a spectacular opening ceremony that was staged at the aptly-named Mediterranean Games Stadium. Flagbearer William Chetcuti spearheaded the Malta contingent in the official athletes march past which included all 21 participating nations.
Over 1,800 volunteers, including children, were present for the ceremony that reached its climax when King Juan Carlos of Spain declared open the 15th edition of the Mediterranean Games.
Shooter Chetcuti in action tomorrow
Meanwhile, none of our athletes will be in action in Almeria today.
Maltese interest in the Med. Games is expected to reach its peak tomorrow when shooters Chetcuti and Emmanuel Grima compete in the double trap event.
Winner of a gold medal in the last two GSSE editions, the 20-year-old Chetcuti is regarded by many as Malta's brightest prospect of winning a medal in the Med. Games.
Swimmer Galea will be back in the pool tomorrow for the 50 metres butterfly heats while Andy Borg will launch his commitments in the opening round of the golf competition.
The Malta U-21 football team will tomorrow tonight play their final Group B match against Turkey at the El Ejido Stadium. On Thursday, Silvio Vella's team lost their opening match against Spain 2-0.
Andrei Agius is suspended after being sent off in the closing stages of the match against the hosts.
