On June 7, the Malta Racing Club in Marsa hosted a full-day activity, including a horse-blessing ceremony, a horse show and a number of horse races all in aid of Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija.
The main aim of this event was to extend fundraising activities outside the grounds of Ir-Razzett and generate additional funds to cover part of the expenses for a new project, the ICT Lab. This computer lab will be specifically built to allow persons with intellectual disability to increase their computer skills by using special software and hardware.
Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija provides free services to over 1,000 persons with disabilities. These services cost Lm300,000 a year, so it depends heavily on fundraising activities since it is not government-affiliated and does not receive foreign funding to finance its complimentary services, many of which are unique in Malta.
The event at the Malta Racing Club was a great success. There were over 100 horses for the blessing ceremony, which was co-ordinated by the Marsa parish priest, and close to 50 participants for the horse show. In the afternoon spectators had the opportunity to watch 67 horse races, which started at 2.30 p.m. and ended at 10 p.m.
The staff and management of Ir-Razzett would like to express their gratitude to all the participants and spectators who donated their money towards their cause.
Special thanks go to the Malta Red Cross volunteers, the mounted police and the police constables who were present on duty, Joe Zerafa, who organised the whole event, Joe Hili, for organising the horse show, Kenneth Vella for co-ordinating most of the PR, and the members of the committee at the Malta Racing Club, including the chairman, George Fenech, the general secretary, Tony De Bono, and the manager, Stefan Cordina.
