The Armed Forces of Malta's Search and Rescue team went to the rescue of an Italian fisherman who suffered a serious fracture of his leg while working at sea on Thursday.

The injured man was first evacuated by helicopter which took him to St Luke's Hospital for treatment.

The injured man was winched on board an AFM ALIII from the Italian fishing vessel Gaetano while this was some 35 nautical miles to the south of Malta.

He had been previously transferred from the Gaetano to the Maltese workboat Ramse since the fishing vessel at the time was involved in tuna catching operations.
