Ray Polidano (April 3) expressed a desire for Heritage Malta to transfer the Gloster Gladiator airframe, currently located at the War Museum in Valletta, to the Malta Aviation Museum Foundation's facility at Ta Qali. May I appeal, through The Times, to the decision makers at Heritage Malta to allow this to happen?

I am English, and through holiday visits to your island have learned more about the extremely important part played by the people of Malta during the World War II. I have visited both the MAMF Museum at Ta' Qali, and the War Museum in Valletta, on several occasions. I think it is very sad that such an important artefact as the Gladiator is displayed in cramped conditions and without wings, when it could be restored, fitted with wings owned by the MAMF, and displayed alongside other wartime aircraft at Ta Qali.

The War Museum is well presented. However, I think that most visitors would feel that it is not the best location to display the Gladiator. The people of the MAMF have already proved their conservation skills by restoring to a very high standard many items and aircraft, including a Spitfire and a Hurricane. I am certain that if they were allowed to restore and display the Gladiator, it would be of much greater value to the heritage of Malta than if it remains in the current location.

I hope the decision makers at Heritage Malta will agree to the transfer.
