The committee against the proposed Sant'Antnin recycling plant will soon present a petition signed by over 7,000 residents to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.
The committee, made up of the local councils of Marsascala, Zabbar and Zejtun and six NGOs, last Friday met MPs from the third electoral district and MEPs.
The meeting was called to help answer residents' questions on health and safety owing to the planned construction and enlargement of the recycling plant.
Mepa is proposing to open a new road right through arable land at Bulebel to enable heavy vehicles to transport rubbish directly to the plant.
The European Commission was informed that the Maltese authorities were consulting the public regarding the proposed plant enlargement but the committee questions the level of consultation taking place.
The committee had objected to Mepa about the construction of the proposed recycling plant and the alternative sites report commissioned by WasteServ.
It has called on Mepa not to accept that report, but to order WasteServ to commission another report compiled by competent and independent experts, after holding a public consultation.
