From recesses to abscesses

The water catchment culverts down Saqqajja Hill below the roundabout had become deep recesses through the heavy traffic using them over the years. Now these have been reconstructed into more sturdy units. There is, however, one nasty snag in the result of this engineering feat. The dip formerly present has now become a bump. Not only that but water will refuse to use them because running water will not go uphill however cajoled The grill covering the culvert is about six centimetres higher than the surrounding street level.

Instead of building the culverts parallel to the wall and at the edge of the road the engineers decided to come out into the road. A skimming of some centimetres off the edge of the road would have created the necessary dislevel for water to run into them.

As they are, these poor culverts will remain dry however much they whistle for rain water. I am sure that those who did the work consider them to be a first class job even with the bumps they cause to all vehicles passing over them. If these are considered state of the art then even my bunions could be classified as such.
