The 'Malta Process' started on the initiative of the European Movement International when the Federal Council met here in Malta last November, makes its next step in September with a Congress of the Mediterranean, which will meet in Algiers.
About 400 participants from Europe and the Arab world are expected to take part.
The Congress is being organised with the support of the Arab Reform Forum and the Dialogue Forum of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, as well as the Mediterranean Committee of the European Movement International, which is headed by M. Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb.
The aim of the congress is to encourage dialogue between the peoples of the Mediterranean through their respective civil societies. Indeed, the main reason behind this initiative is that dialogue and the development of a common vision for the region must not be left to governments alone but must involve civil society.
The aim of this initiative is to support change in the region. One of the many initiatives the EMI proposes is the setting up of a Euro-Mediterranean Court of Human Rights.
