On May 20, seven schools from the Cottonera area participated in an open day for students at Access Complex.

Ably organised by the management team at Access, this activity encompassed all that is expected from modern didactic methods. Ms Calleja acted as the contact person between the school organisations and those bodies who had some activity to share with the pupils.

The schools represented were: Vittoriosa and Cospicua Primaries, St Edward's College Primary, De La Salle College Secondary, Erin Serracino Inglott Boys' and Lorenzo Gafà Girls' Secondary. The open day was divided into five workshops which were repeated a number of times to create a more participatory environment.

Five themes were presented and discussed: Green places, safe places; Tile Painting; Citizenship Time Line; Ghix Mument, Esperjenza ta' dizabilità; and When I grow Up. Waterfront Cottonera Project was present with a donation of literacy resource material.

"Green places, safe places" was conducted by Rotary Club La Valette Malta who presented their project for the rehabilitation of the Santa Margherita Lines. This site is situated just opposite the Access offices.

The children were accompanied for a walk along the area and the historical value of the fortifications was explained by Stephen C. Spiteri and Rotary Club La Valette members. Participants were also made aware of the garden set-up that is being planned. Neville Ebejer explained the value of ecological balance.

Back at the Access offices, a power point presentation was shown by Club president Chris Galea, John Dimech and member Robert Agius. Rotarian Dr Sandra Dingli spent some time with the pupils conducting a thinking skills workshop.

To make the morning more exciting, RCLVM presented all the children with Playmobil freebies, Safari and Capri Sun cartons of juice as well as pencils and note books.

Rotary Club La Valette Malta are glad to discuss the project with interested parties and any donations are welcome. E-mail: secretary@rotarylavalette.org.
