Peter Straub, the president of the EU's Committee of the Regions, will arrive in Malta on a two-day official visit on Monday.

Created in 1994, the Committee of the Regions is a consultative assembly which provides elected local and regional government politicians with a voice at the heart of the European Union.

Mr Straub will meet President Eddie Fenech Adami and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi as well as European and national MPs and members of the Maltese delegation to the Committee of the Regions.

His visit will coincide with a meeting of the Committee of the Regions Commission for Constitutional Affairs and European Governance in St Julians on Tuesday.

During the meeting, members will debate the current situation regarding the process for the ratification of the EU Constitutional Treaty, in the light of the French and Dutch no votes and the decision of the UK Parliament to suspend its referendum.

Mr Straub will also hold talks with the chairman and members of the House of Representatives' Standing Committee on Foreign and European Affairs.
