Why is it that no effective decisions are taken with regard to the repeated hunters' shooting sprees that are tarring the image Malta might try to build with visiting tourists? Are we scared of losing votes more than losing tourists? Why are the promised green wardens not yet out and about?

I recently heard Lawrence Gonzi saying he would rather lose the next election doing the right things than win it by deceiving the people. I feel that if the green wardens were introduced, the government would gain ground in the coming election, as the state of the environment will be a primary issue.

And in order for the Wednesday PR column not to label such efforts as involving additional taxes - and so that offenders would learn a quick lesson - all green fines should be commuted to community service. Can you imagine anybody willing to spend a week sweeping the Sliema promenade?
