I read with shock a statement by the Malta Abortion Rights Support group, as reported on one of the local online news sites, that "the government should see that all the people living in Malta, including foreigners, are given their rights and freedom of choice... if the... government thinks that those in the minority are nothing and can be ignored we will take steps to show them what effect we can have by the international boycott".

The above statement implies that the group considers, as its name demonstrates, that abortion is a right and that citizens should be given the choice of whether to abort the unborn baby or not. May I remind the group that abortion is nothing less than murder - the killing of an unborn human life?

A person on the panel of Xarabank, during a discussion on the topic, claimed that a woman should have the right to choose what to do with her life when she has 20 years ahead of her. Does the right of a woman to be free from any commitment override her unborn baby's right to live? Should a human life pay the price of an unwelcome pregnancy? Should a child be put to death so that the woman can enjoy more pleasure?

We, as responsible human beings, have a responsibility to protect and promote human life - not destroy it. It is not a case of arguing when an unborn child should be aborted - life begins at the moment the egg is fertilised - but rather a matter of assisting pregnant mothers facing difficult moments. Abortion is not an option.
