The reflections of Ranier Fsadni, On A Collision Course With Technology (May 26), regarding the entrenchment of the anti-abortion law in the Constitution, make interesting and provocative reading. I share his agreement "on principle" with this proposed entrenchment and his stand against abortion.

His reasons to advise against this same entrenchment for "strategic" reasons fail, however, to convince me.

What is at issue in this entrenchment proposal is not the definition, present or future, of abortion, but its prohibition and strong refusal. Scientific research will continue to teach us more about this mystery that we call human life. This is, however, distinct from the free and ethical decisions of what we want to do with it.

It is never too early to take a clear stand about the sacredness of human life. We are not prepared to wait till science can tell us the exact moment when a human life comes into existence, before we commit ourselves to protect it. We have already experienced how fragile and volatile "scientific" discoveries can be.

Science can never be the master, but only the partner of human judgement.

Science and technology are the tools, but the human soul remains the discerning artist.

Science can fine-tune the questions, but only life provides the answers. Even while dissecting life, whether it be through our intellectual fineries or the surgical scalpel, what saves us humans from self-destruction remains our wholeness.

And wholeness is simply another name for holiness. This is why we hold life to be holy and sacred. Hence our stand against abortion and any kind of killing.

Similarly we hold our Constitution as the proper sanctuary for all that we hold sacred. Let us never tire of building a truly human and humane society, where no one, not even an unborn child, needs to fear his own or other people's weaknesses.

This is not just pronouncing lofty principles but also applying a sound strategy.
