Dances of Time at Maria Assumpta

Dances of Time - the production for this year's Prize Day at Maria Assumpta Girls' Secondary School, Hamrun - was a well choreographed production of dance and movement inspired by the bond among man, nature and the environment through time.

The sequences were created by Jane Micallef, assisted by Sheila Attard, while Phaedra Borg helped the girls through their steps and movement. However the 'prima donnas' of the night will always remain the girls themselves, who give of their best and know they can delight an audience.

Indeed Prize Day at Maria Assumpta has become a hallmark of its good qualities calling upon the creative and skilled talents of its teaching staff. Charles Calleja designed a simple yet effective set while Emmanuel Aquilina led a light and sound crew to give crisp renditions of Morricone, Jenkins and De Falla synchronised perfectly to light and CG visuals. The elaborate wardrobe was the work of Mary O'Brien, Marianne Busuttil, Doris Pace D'Anastasi, Jane Sciortino and Phyllis Spiteri.

Another proud man on the night was surely the headmaster, Ray Vella, who had plenty of words of encouragement for the students at Maria Assumpta. Mindful not only of their talents but also of a string of academic results obtained last year, he spoke of the strengths and weaknesses of the school but focused mainly on the vital link between school and home.

Alfred Mallia, director of education (operations), led a number of distinguished guests from the Division, other schools, ex-officials and Deputy Speaker Carmelo Abela, Shadow Minister of Education.

Dances of Time was performed four times, each time to a full house.
