Lm500,000 spent on illegally dumped waste

The Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure last year spent Lm500,000 just to collect waste that was dumped illegally in various parts of the island, Minister Ninu Zammit said yesterday.

In the first five months of this year, over 7,000 tons of such waste, also dumped illegally, was collected from valleys, industrial zones and arterial roads at the cost of Lm200,000, he said.

Mr Zammit was speaking when he visited Hal Far where waste dumped near factories was being removed by the Cleansing Section of the ministry.

This site was literally turned into a dump with all kinds of rubbish and refuse being thrown away there.

Similar clean-ups were carried out in recent months at Mriehel, Fort St Elmo in Valletta, Fort St Angelo, Rinella, Popeye Village, San Klement Bastion in Cospicua, Ghajn Rihana at Burmarrad and Wied is-Sewda and Wied Lewza.
