For the last 35 years, I have spent the summer months at Pretty Bay, Birzebbuga with my family. But alas! Last Sunday afternoon, as we arrived to start our vacation in this otherwise quiet and relaxing summer resort, we were greeted with a very loud repetitive noise - so-called disco music coming from the waterpolo pitch area.

We found out that a disco party is being held every Saturday and Sunday from as early as 2 p.m. and lasting to 11 p.m. For the information of all, this open-air waterpolo pitch is situated in the middle of a residential area and next to the sandy beach which is popular with many families with young children who go to Pretty Bay to rest and bathe in a reasonably quiet area.

In this week dedicated to the environment, noise pollution is often forgotten. Another adverse aspect of these disco parties is the abuse of drugs and excess drinking which take place. Considering all these, the permit to hold these disco parties should never have been granted and therefore the permit should be revoked forthwith.

I have no doubt that the mayor together with the Birzebbuga local council, who I know have the welfare of the community at heart, will use their influence in this regard.
