Pasanski in final
Camenzuli settles for bronze
Boris Pasanski is through to the final of the men's singles competition after dismissing the challenge of Monaco's Guillame Couillard 7-6 6-3 at the Centre Poliesportiu de l'Aldosa yesterday.
However, Lisa Camenzuli experienced different fortunes in the singles, losing heavily to Mandy Minella, of Luxembourg, 6-1 6-0. Camenzuli now has to be content with another bronze medal in this competition.
Pasanski was off to a flier when he broke Couillard in the opening game. He looked well in control but in the fifth game he lost serve and from then on the match remained balanced. A tie-break was needed and Pasanski recouped forces to win the decider 7-3.
That seemed to leave a positive effect on the 21-year-old Serbia-born player. He completely outplayed his opponent in the second set, breaking him twice to seal the set 6-3 and qualify for the final tomorrow afternoon.
Pasanski's opponent will be Benjamin Balleret, of Monaco.
Balleret beat Arnar Sigurdsson, of Iceland, in three sets - 4-6 6-4 6-2.
For Camenzuli the bronze medal will be the fourth one in her GSSE singles career after the ones of Iceland '97, San Marino '01 and Malta '03.
Yesterday, Malta's leading female player, with a heavily bandaged right shoulder, was never in the match as Minella immediately imposed her superiority, hitting perfect winners from all angles.
Minella's play left her opponent struggling. She was leading 5-0 when Camenzuli finally managed to hold her serve in the sixth game but Minella soon sealed the first set 6-1 in her favour.
The second set was a one-sided affair with Camenzuli committing a series of unforced errors that paved the way for the Luxembourg player to secure her passage to the final with a comfortable margin.
In the final Minella plays against Stephanie Vogt, of Liechtenstein. She beat Lynn Philippe, of Luxembourg, 6-3 6-4.
Malta Tennis Federation general secretary David Farrugia Sacco said it was difficult for Camenzuli to play her game as she was not 100 per cent fit.
"Lisa is a fighter but today she couldn't do better than that," he said.
"Her injured shoulder did not let her serve properly and that was a great handicap.
"Lisa still deserves all the credit she can get because it's not easy to make the medals zone when troubled by injury."
Doubles upset
Later on in the afternoon Camenzuli and Stephanie Pace were eliminated from the women's doubles semi-final by Liechtenstein pair Vogt and Johanna Hemmerle. They lost 6-3 7-5.
This afternoon the Maltese will face Iceland's Rebekka Petursdottir and Sigurlaug Sigurdardottir in the play-off for third place.
Luxembourg play Liechtenstein in the final.
