Malta's elite athletes began their quest for a fine showing in the 2005 GSSE on Monday. The highlights of the day were the gold medals won by Angela Galea in the 200m 'fly and that obtained by judoka Marcon Bezzina in the U-57kg. On finishing the race, an elated Galea lay motionless on the pool deck for a few moments as she reflected on her achievement.

In the judo arena, the Maltese kept a close watch on proceedings as our judokas ended the day with one gold and three bronze. More medals came in athletics where Carol Galea took silver in 5,000m and Lisa Bezzina and Darren Gilford collected bronze in the 800m and 100m respectively.

In the cycling time trial, Malta was represented by Jack Schiavone and Roderick Muscat, the latter securing bronze after a strong performance.
