Saudi Arabia's King Fahd's health has greatly improved and he may leave hospital within the next few days, Interior Minister Prince Nayef said yesterday.

"I would like to reassure you that today in particular the improvement and progress was very big," Mr Nayef told a meeting of Gulf interior ministers in Riyadh.

"His health thank God is as good as can be. Hopefully, he will leave the hospital in the next few days," added Mr Nayef, who is Fahd's brother. The deteriorating health of 83-year-old Fahd caused jitters at home and abroad. Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporting country, has been battling al Qaeda militants for two years.
