How are the rights in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights to correspond with the European Convention on Human Rights?

All EU member states are party to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The EU Constitution therefore lays down that insofar as the EU Charter contains rights which correspond to rights guaranteed by the European Convention, the meaning and scope of those rights shall be the same as those laid down by the said Convention. This provision shall not prevent Union law providing more extensive protection.
