Hajduk win title: Hajduk Split clinched their sixth league title since Croatia's 1991 independence yesterday with an emphatic 6-0 home victory over Varteks Varazdin in the last round of the championship. Hajduk ended with 56 points, two more than runners-up Inter Zapresic, who started the day level but could only draw 3-3 with fourth-placed Rijeka, who denied Hajduk the double by beating them on aggregate in the Croatian Cup final last week.
Gerets: VfL Wolfsburg coach Erik Gerets resigned yesterday, leaving the German club a year before his contract expired. Belgian Gerets, 51, a former Kaiserslautern coach, took over for Juergen Roeber in April last year and helped Wolfsburg climb to the top of the table in the first half of the season. But German media have reported Gerets had clashed repeatedly with the club's new commercial manager Thomas Strunz.
Salas: Chile coach Nelson Acosta has told striker Marcelo Salas to join the national team tomorrow and forget about playing for his Argentine club River Plate in the Libertadores Cup this week. Acosta, who will be starting his second stint in charge of the team when Chile play World Cup qualifiers at home to Bolivia on June 4 and Venezuela four days later, said that Chile's need was greater. "It's a FIFA date, so he has to be with us four days before," Acosta said.
