The NCW's Social Issues Committee is holding a talk on 'Child Abuse and Children under Care Orders' by Carmen Zammit, Homes director of residential facilities, at the NCW Centre, Blata l-Bajda, on Wednesday at 5.30 p.m.
Ms Zammit will talk about cases where children are at risk of abuse, the social background from which they hail, the causes of such abuse, and the resources available to assist children at risk of abuse.
This talk is part of a programme of activities under the theme 'Children at Risk' selected by the Social Issues Committee for 2005.
All council members and the public are invited to attend.
The Education Committee is organising a book appreciation evening of Lina Brockdorff's Sireni u Serenati on Wednesday, June 8, at 6 p.m. at the NCW Centre, Blata l-Bajda.
A Lm1 donation can be made at the entrance. Refreshments will be served during the evening. The closing date for bookings is Tuesday, June 6.
Ms Brockdorff has kindly offered to sign copies of Sireni u Serenati, published by Klabb Kotba Maltin. The book will be on sale during the evening for those who would like to obtain a copy.
The Health Committee is organising a talk on back pain on Saturday at 9.30 a.m. at the NCW Centre, Blata l-Bajda.
The speaker is Dr Douglas Inkol, DC, FAFICC (USA).
There is a Lm1 registration fee.
The Environment Committee is organising a talk on Genetically Modified Organisms by Dr M. Zammit Mangion on Thursday, June 16 at 6.30 p.m. at the NCW's premises
The talk will provide an opportunity to hear about the science involved in producing genetically modified plants as well as the EU Directives which regulate their use.
A review of the scientific and ethical issues concerning the use of these plants will also be presented.
