The Fencing Association of Malta will be holding its 2005 National Championships this weekend at the Mtarfa Gymnasium.

Organisers said in a statement that 40 fencers have been registered to figure in Foil and Epee competitions during the championships.

The association added that two Italian referees, Alessandro Macauda and Flavio Buscema, will preside the bouts.

Today's programme is reserved for Foil. The first competition, at 9 a.m., involves fencers between the ages of 10 and 13. Other competitions for cadets are scheduled for 10.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m.

The men's Foil for seniors gets underway at 2 p.m.

The women's Foil events for seniors opens the programme tomorrow, also at 9 a.m. Epee competitions follow at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The scoring system at the Mtarfa Gymnasium will be of international standard thanks to the latest electronic apparatus provided by the Italian Fencing Federation.
