A teacher at the Maria Goretti Girls' secondary school, in Tarxien was verbally and physically attacked by a student at the school premises on Tuesday, the Malta Union of Teachers said yesterday.

The MUT expressed solidarity with the teacher and urged parents to instruct their children to respect their teachers.

The MUT also strongly deplored the attack which it said developed when the student used foul and vulgar language when addressing the teacher in the presence of other students.

The union said that while the teacher was accompanying the student to the office of the school head, the student waved her hand threateningly in front of the teacher's face. The student then allegedly punched the teacher, the MUT said.

A report about the incident was lodged at the Paola police station.
