Mepa 'monitoring' Kalkara valley

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority said it was doing its utmost to ensure that the developers of the Kalkara valley strictly abide by the permits granted.

Environment organisations have joined in a chorus of disapproval of the development in the valley and Kalkara mayor Michael Cohen has threatened to resort to legal action if Mepa continued to "abdicate" its responsibilities.

The authority said it would do its utmost to reduce the inconvenience to residents. Its officials would keep monitoring the area at regular intervals.

A surprise visit to the site on Monday showed no excavations were carried out within 10 metres of the residences in the vicinity, Mepa said.

"Although the site is dusty, the road leading to it is relatively clean," Mepa said.
