Sporting heritage and a history dating back to the early decades of the last century were emphasised at the launch of the restyled Alfa 147 on Friday at the Red Tower in Mellieha.
Ryan Buttigieg, marketing manager of UCIM Co. Ltd, spoke of the emotion the Alfa marque evokes, and examined the potential customer for the "true sports" car. "The new Alfa 147, as with the rest of the Alfa range, provides the definitive confirmation of (the) notion of car design, surprisingly anticipated by the Nuvola and the Brera," he said.
"This evolution and transformation of the concept of sporting character into a coherent nucleus of aesthetic references has produced a progressive accentuation of the value and weight of design within the engineering process by which new Alfa Romeos are born."
UCIM sales manager John Tabone outlined the new design features of the 147 inside and out. What he termed "a gentle makeover" is most noticeable from the front. "The coupé-like proportions and sharp detailing remain with that unique Italian sense of style," he said.
"Large slanted new lights and an even bigger grille give the 147 that aggressive and distinctive appearance and now look modern with that sportier touch." The overall design was conceived to further minimise drag. There is a choice of 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol engines and 1.9 JTD diesels with 115 and 150 bhp. There are five- and six-speed gearboxes, apart from the clutch free Selespeed and a new robotised Easy Speed transmission (on the 2.0-litre from September).
There are eight fresh colours of the 14 available. The upholstery range makes it easier to combine with a personalised colour preference.
Mr Tabone announced that UCIM Co. will "very shortly introduce a 1.6-litre 105 bhp Impression version of the new 147, offering a lower power band, making it even more reachable to a younger target market.
"This version is slightly trimmed in accessories when compared to the 120 bhp Distinctive version, will be offered at Lm10,600. Nonetheless, the 147 105 bhp is still richer in standard equipment than its competitors, offering exceptional value for the prestige identified in an Alfa Romeo badge."
