A Tunisian man was yesterday cleared of assaulting two local wardens when a magistrate ruled the charge had not been sufficiently proven.

Mousef Ali Ben Mohamed Choubene, 41, was cleared of assaulting the two wardens in Fgura on July 23, 2004.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti heard the wardens explain that Mr Choubene attacked them when they stopped him for ignoring a stop sign. Mr Choubene said the wardens had shouted out an insult at him from their car.

Police Inspector Malcolm Spiteri prosecuted.
