Winger Ryan Giggs could overtake Bobby Charlton and set a record for Manchester United appearances after signing a two-year extension to his contract.

United announced yesterday that Welshman Giggs, who has been at United since he was 13, and American goalkeeper Tim Howard had agreed to extend their contracts for two years.

"This will keep Ryan and Tim at the club until June 2008 and June 2009 respectively," the club said in a statement.

Giggs, 31, has won every honour in the English game since making his debut for United in March 1991, including seven league titles, three FA Cups and the European Cup in 1999.

In September he played his 600th game for the Old Trafford club. Only Bill Foulkes (688) and Charlton (759) have played more. Ahead of Sunday's FA Cup final against Arsenal, Giggs' total stands at 635 games.
