Preston North End scored once in each half to beat Derby County 2-0 at home in the first leg of their Division One promotion play-off yesterday.

Preston, seeking to play in the Premier League for the first time, went ahead seven minutes before the interval through striker David Nugent from a flicked pass by midfielder Chris Sedgwick.
