A Valletta man was yesterday charged with stabbing a Somali refugee in Floriana on Wednesday night.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima heard William Mercieca, 31, plead not guilty to assaulting and seriously injuring Aadani Adbi Hussein when he stabbed him at about 9.15 p.m.

Mr Mercieca also pleaded not guilty to the possession of a knife at the time of the crime and relapsing.

At the end of the sitting the magistrate turned down Mr Mercieca's request for bail at this stage.

Police Inspectors Joseph Mercieca and Alexander Grech prosecuted.

Dr Renzo Porsella Flores appeared for Mr Mercieca.
