A new day ward was yesterday opened within the Oncology Department at Boffa Hospital to cater for patients getting treatment for various types of cancer.
Health Minister Louis Deguara said since more cancer patients were recovering or living considerably longer because of the treatment they were receiving, the volume of work for the department had increased. This had led to the need for a new day ward to cater for the number of patients needing treatment.
To date, facilities at the chemotherapy day ward lacked a number of comforts and patients were getting their treatment in unsuitable conditions because of lack of space and privacy.
In a bid to make patients more comfortable, the men's ward was transferred to another area to provide more space for the day ward, which now offers more privacy and comfort.
The new day ward also includes a waiting room so that patients will no longer have to wait in the corridor.
