The Marsovin Group has launched the first Gozitan Syrah, called Ulysses in honour of the hero of Greek mythology who symbolised determination, conviction and the will to reach predetermined objectives.

The premium wine is a 2004 vintage produced from a yield of 15,224 kilos of handpicked Syrah grapes, harvested in seven selected family vineyards.

The majority of the vineyards are found at Ramla Valley, situated between Xaghra and Nadur. They are overlooked by Calypso's Cave, in which the mythological hero was believed to have spent seven years with the nymph Calypso, according to Homer's Odyssey.

The wine was launched earlier this week in the villa below the cave by former President Censu Tabone. Marsovin set the theme by having "nymphs" to serve the wine.

The first vintage produced just 16,320 bottles.
