Italian riders took back control of the Giro d'Italia yesterday with Danilo Di Luca winning the third stage and Paolo Bettini reclaiming the leader's pink jersey.

Di Luca beat 2004 Giro winner Damiano Cunego in a thrilling finish in the centre of Giffoni after a short climb close to the finish shook up the race.

Olympic champion Bettini finished sixth on the stage between Diamante and Giffoni Valle Piana after being blocked in the sprint. He did enough to regain the lead after overnight leader Robbie McEwen could only finish 69th, one minute and two seconds behind the winner.
