The oil drilling ship GSF Explorer is at Malta Shipyards for an extensive refit.

The rig belongs to GlobalSantaFe Corporation of Houston Texas.

At over 200 metres long and carrying 140 persons, the GSF Explorer is a true leviathan designed for ultra-deepwater drilling in water depths of 10,000 feet. The rig uses no anchors to maintain position while drilling but instead uses dynamic positioning. The GSF Explorer has 11 thrusters constantly running with a combined horsepower of 35,200 to hold position in the roughest seas. A quadruple satellite global positioning system ensures the rig keeps its position to the nearest metre.

Cassar & Cooper are the agents for GlobalSantaFe in Malta.
