Although the notion that athletes get slower as they grow older generally holds true, some do manage to maintain the same standards despite moving to the veteran age bracket.
At last month's Marsascala 10k race for veterans, organised by the MAAA, Zurrieq Wolves AC's leading female athlete Cecilia Fenech established a new personal best for the distance when clocking 38.52.
The result enabled her to finish second overall and third on adjusted time behind Carol Galea and Liz Said.
It is turning out to be quite a year for Fenech who won the 2005 Malta Marathon, her fourth success that came exactly ten years after she won it for the first time.
Fenech, a two-time winner of the Malta International Running Challenge, also has a number of foreign marathons under her belt.
Probably, her most prestigious result is the 52nd placing in the 1998 London Marathon.
On that occasion there were over 10,000 female runners taking part.
Also in 1998, she took part in the Palermo International Marathon and won the race in 3.01.40. Late last year, she registered her best marathon time ever, a 2.57.10 in Vienna. She was third in the over 40 category.
Medcomms Ltd recently recognised Fenech's position as a leading long distance runner and sponsored her with the latest version of the Garmin Forerunner - the 301 System.
The Garmin Forerunner is an ideal training partner that continuously monitors heart rate, speed, distance and pace, making training sessions more effective.
