The innovatively produced DVD, Ulied Maltin, recounting visually in short excerpts the lives of 20 eminent Maltese, was launched on April 22 at Guzè Despott Hall in Floriana. It uses digitally enhanced videography to present mini-documentaries of famous sons and daughters of the Maltese Islands, such as Dun Karm Psaila, Anton Buttigieg, Antonio Sciortino, Temi Zammit and others.
School heads, assistant heads, education officers, assistant directors and directors of education attended the launch, which was presided over by director of education Alfred Mallia, who spoke of the excellent visual nature of the DVD and its importance as an educational tool.
This theme was picked up by Professor Peter Mayo of the Faculty of Education, University of Malta, who spoke of the motivational nature of the DVD, and how it can give backgrounds to, for example, the poets, in succinct, effective ways.
Dr Gorg Mallia of the University's Centre for Communication Technology, spoke of the need for a visual dimension in education and how this meets the need of youngsters steeped in new technologies, and how a visually oriented education is more in tune with the changed processing abilities of those who have grown with the Internet, multimedia and electronic gaming.
Excerpts from the DVD were shown during the launch.
The DVD is produced by Kenneth Mizzi of Horizons.
