Oh Malta Transport Authority, how much do I love thee? Let me count the cost.

Driving theory CD: Lm3. Hop over to Malta for computerised theory test: Lm3. Charge for taking said test (passed): Lm13. Driving test application (failed): Lm10.

Driving instructor time and use of specially equipped vehicle (one hour): Lm4. Instructor's insurance charge and use of specially-equipped vehicle for taking first driving test: Lm14.

Application for taking second driving test: Lm10. Instructor's insurance charge and use of specially-equipped vehicle for taking second driving test: Lm14. Total: Lm71!

I obtained my Malta driving licence shortly after turning 18 years of age. Since then I have been licensed to drive in Libya, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Upon my return to Malta, since my current driving licence was not issued by an EU country, I was told I would have to go through the application process all over again. I could not even use my own car to take the driving test, I had to go through a driving school. Hence the Lm14 every time the test is taken.

What a racket! What a farce! What a way to make people part with their money!

If only my hard-earned cash and that of others in like situations went towards fixing the poor excuse that passes for a road system in Gozo, I wouldn't be feeling like Michael Douglas did prior to going on his rampage in the movie Falling Down right now!
