Twice former European champions Nottingham Forest were relegated to the third tier of English soccer after a 2-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
Forest, who won the English league title in 1978 and the European Cup in 1979 and 1980, are second from bottom of the second division on 43 points, six adrift of safety with one game to play.
Gary Megson's men virtually sealed their own fate with a 32nd-minute red card for midfielder Darryl Powell and an own goal by John Curtis before half-time.
Marc Bircham scored QPR's second soon after the re-start, while Eugen Bopp pulled one back for a Forest side who have won only nine of their 45 league games this season.
Forest were relegated from the Premier League in 1999. They last played in the third tier of English football in 1951.
Last September Brian Clough, the club's greatest manager, died of stomach cancer aged 69.
