The Nationalist Party's workers' section in a May Day statement said yesterday that the government's investment in research, training and education would create quality jobs for Maltese workers.

Tony Abela, president of Solidarjetà Haddiema Partit Nazzjonalista, said the government's main aim was to use all the country's resources and the people's potential, and that was why it was investing in education.

This year the government had raised University funding by Lm1.2 million, while capital investment for MCAST reached Lm2.3 million through financing by the European Union. Last year the Employment and Training Corporation provided training for more than 5,700 people.

Mr Abela said workers were always at the centre of the Nationalist Party's policies because the party believed that work gave people dignity. He added that the party not only worked for a strong economy but also gave importance to working conditions including occupational health and safety.

He also spoke about how the government was offering incentives for women to return to the labour force and how the government's policy was reaping results - in the last year foreign investment reached Lm141 million... a 27 per cent increase over the previous year.
