Tony Abela, Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, who is responsible for the Armed Forces of Malta, was yesterday introduced to the role and functions of the AFM's 2nd Regiment Maritime Squadron when he visited its Haywharf base at Marsamxett Harbour.

Squadron members demonstrated their skills and displayed various pieces of equipment.

The squadron then known as the Maritime Battery was set up in 1970. It was initially stationed at Sheer Bastion in Senglea and was relocated to Haywharf in 1978.

Its functions include the surveillance of territorial waters against illegal activities and search and rescue operations.

The maritime base is currently undergoing extension works which will comprise quarters to accommodate members of the squadron while on duty.
