A Ftira Day organised by the staff and students of St Theresa Girls' Junior Lyceum, Mriehel, on March 17 raised Lm300 for Maltese missionaries working in Romania and Honduras.

The activity was held during Lent in order to instil among the students an appreciation for the work done by missionaries.

Teachers and some 50 students (who came an hour before school started) helped prepare the delicious ftajjar of which no fewer than 800 were sold. Sponsors were also roped in, while most of the students contributed the ingredients.

So it was with justified pride that the school head, Josette Mifsud Matrenza, on April 13 presented half the proceeds (Lm150) to Sr Carmen Sammut, a Maltese missionary in Romania, who was on one of her periodic visits to Malta. The rest of the money will eventually be donated to a Maltese missionary in Honduras.

Sr Sammut thanked St Theresa Junior Lyceum teachers, other staff and students for their generous gesture and spoke to them about her work among the poor and disadvantaged in Romania and Algeria.

Ftira Day was co-ordinated by two teachers, Ms Mary Chetcuti and Mrs Maria Alberta Spiteri.
