A woman was yesterday charged with bigamy while the second man she allegedly married and the two witnesses to their union were charged with complicity.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi heard Maria Agius, 27, plead not guilty to marrying Syrian national Sameh Derbas on May 28, 2003, when she was already married to Ismael Maher.

Mr Derbas, 39, and the two witnesses Jean Pierre Mamo, 21, and Ms Agius' sister Helen, 26, pleaded not guilty to complicity.

Dr Joseph Brincat noted that Ms Agius' alleged marriage with the first husband was null and void. He asked the magistrate to suspend the compilation of evidence until the Civil Court decided on the validity of Ms Agius' first marriage.

Dr Brincat also noted that Ms Agius did not have the means to pay for the civil case.

The magistrate did not hear evidence during yesterday's sitting and put off the case for next Friday.

Police Inspector Raymond Aquilina prosecuted.

Dr Brincat appeared for the Agius' and for Mr Derbas while Dr Anthony Cutajar appeared for Mr Mamo.
