Maltacom will be transferring the provision of maritime communication operations in Malta's coastal areas to the Armed Forces of Malta.

As from May 1, the AFM will operate Malta Radio vital services from their operations room at Luqa Barracks. These are the maritime safety information transmissions and the maritime distress systems.

Malta Radio's role will focus exclusively on search and rescue at sea, the prevention of maritime incidents and the promotion of safety.

After the move to the AFM, Maltacom will no longer offer Malta Radio's commercial service.

A spokesman for Maltacom said the measure will not affect the maritime community.

The spokesman added that newly emerging 21st century telecom technologies now give marine communities easy access to cutting edge communications including maritime data solutions and information content provision.

Until further notification, Malta Radio's number has changed. Customers wishing to make contact are requested to do so on 2124 9784 or telex 1317 MW.
