The Malta Football Referees Association (MFRA) is calling on the authorities to increase security at local grounds after football matches were blighted by trouble last weekend.

"The MFRA deplores the violent incidents suffered by its members last weekend," Adrian D. Casha, the association's honorary secretary, said in a statement.

"On one occasion, the Division One match between St George's and Senglea Athletic had to be abandoned after an invading supporter attacked the assistant referee and another attempted to assault the referee.

"In a separate incident from another Div. One match, a player of San Gwann reacted aggressively towards the referee after being sent off whereas in a game from the Futsal Championship, a player chased the referee as the latter was leaving the ground," the MFRA statement said.

Lack of security has been evident in all these incidents, the MFRA noted.

"We appeal for more security at local grounds," the MFRA added.

"The MFRA also urges players, club officials and fans to show more respect towards the match officials. We also want to express our solidarity with the referees who were victims of violent incidents.

"While the MFRA encourages its members to continue carrying out their duties towards the MFA and the game of football, we remind them of their responsibility not to start or continue matches at venues where security is inadequate."
